Kāhui ā-whānau
Family/Whānau Group

Welcome to our Whānau / Family group page.

My name is Lisa Hortin and I am the coordinator of the Whānau/Family Core Group (often known as Whānau Group) within the Waitaha Regional Leadership Group (WRLG). You can read more about me at the bottom of this page.

My email is familygroup@eglwaitaha.org and I would love to hear from you any time.

Our focus is on ensuring that whānau/family and their disabled members live fulfilling, mana-enhancing lives.

We believe that:

  • if whānau/family are not also living good lives, the disabled people who rely on them will struggle to do so

  • whānau/family input plays an important role in communicating what it is for their disabled person and whānau to live a good life. Whānau are people of action, advocating on behalf of their disabled whānau.

  • whānau/family serve as vital advocates and "translators" for some within the disabled community, especially those who are under 18 years of age, and those who are not able to express their ‘voice’

  • the needs and experiences of a disabled person can have an impact on their whānau. Whānau refers to everyone within the close network of the disabled person, including caregivers, siblings, children, flatmates, etc

That is why we:

lightbulb image.jpg

Inspire whānau/family and their disabled people to imagine and be inspired to live good ordinary lives.

Listen to and amplify whānau/family voices to ensure that voice is part of the systemic advocacy and change

people connecting image.jpg

Nurture stronger relationships between whānau and service providers in order to facilitate better opportunities for disabled people and their whānau to live good ‘ordinary’ lives.

vote image_edited.png

Develop whānau/family knowledge and skill to participate in democratic processes (eg consultations, voting) where political decisions impact on disabled people and their whānau living good ‘ordinary’ lives.

Meet the Team

Stephanie Rolinson Stephanie proudly serves as a family representative for the Waitaha Leadership Group. With a background as a Mental Health Clinical Psychologist, she stepped away from clinical practice to provide intensive support for her high-needs children. This personal journey ignited her passion for advocacy, first in education and later in mental health, where she has worked as a family and whānau advisor, combining professional expertise with lived experience. Having firsthand experience of how invaluable communities are in sharing information and supporting one another, Stephanie understands the vital role they play—especially when society doesn’t always provide the support disabled people and their families need. She values the strength of online communities in filling this gap, ensuring that whānau can access the knowledge, connection, and advocacy they need to navigate health, education, and disability services. Dedicated to amplifying the voices of families, Stephanie has contributed to a range of grassroots initiatives that have positively impacted many whānau. She is also an active contributor to Listening to Families, a platform that connects whānau and clinicians through video resources that explore real-world challenges in health, disability, and wellbeing. Passionate about Enabling Good Lives, Stephanie is committed to building a system that empowers disabled people and their whānau to live the lives they choose—supported with dignity, autonomy, and the right resources in place.

Irene Andrell Irene is passionate about serving as a Family representative for the Waitaha Leadership group. Irene brings 30 years of lived experience navigating the disability system, alongside her husband of 40 years, as they are for their two youngest daughters—now in their 30s. Irene and Kerry are proud grandparents to their 9-year-old granddaughter. Having firsthand experience of being a service provider, working in the Disability Sector, as well as being a service user for her daughters, Irene has extensive skills and knowledge in connecting and communicating with others to make a difference within the disability community and beyond. Irene received a Community Services Award in 2008 in recognition of outstanding and dedicated service to her community. Being one of the first families to participate in the Enabling Good Lives Pilot in Christchurch in 2014 opened their eyes to what could be possible for their two youngest daughters who both have very high needs with the right supports the possibilities are endless. Irene looks forward to meeting you at one of our community events.

Lisa Hortin (Co-ordinator) Lisa is deeply passionate about the disability sector, with both professional and lived experience spanning nearly 30 years. She has worked in the field for over a decade and has also been a dedicated advocate and board member while her son was in school, where she gained valuable governance experience. Following the earthquakes, Lisa pursued a Diploma in Social Work and Social Services, which solidified her commitment to making a meaningful difference in people’s lives. During this time, she collaborated with the Red Cross to establish a $750 disability grant, which provided essential support to many disabled individuals and their families. For seven years, Lisa worked as an Enabling Good Lives (EGL) Connector, witnessing and adapting to significant changes in the sector. She now enjoys a role that offers greater flexibility and reduced fatigue, allowing her to balance her professional and personal life while continuing to make a positive impact. Meet Lisa and her son Te Ramanui as use the EGL vision and principles in their lives.
