The start of Waitaha EGL Regional Leadership Group
In 2012 the Ministerial Committee on Disability Issues agreed that the EGL Vision and Approach could be the basis for change in the disability support system.
There were two important steps to implementing the EGL Approach:
-
system change is necessary. Part of that system change is involving disabled people and families in governance.
-
disabled people need to have opportunities for learning and thinking differently about what life can look like using EGL.
To begin addressing these:
-
in 2013 a Christchurch Demonstration (pilot) was set up. Included in that was the establishment of a Leadership Group. This Group was active for a period
-
in 2018 the Waitaha EGL Regional Leadership Group was established
There is also a national group - they are called NEGL and you can find out more about them here.
Our mission
Enabling Good Lives (EGL) is an approach to guide positive change so that ALL disabled people and their whānau/family have greater choice and control over their lives. We are contracted to create, join and partner in support opportunities that give people more choice and control in creating a good life.
The Waitaha Enabling Good Lives (EGL) Regional Leadership Group's purpose is to lead this change in Waitaha (Canterbury).
Our Team
The WRLG is designed to represent the wider disabled community in Waitaha. There is space in the group for representatives of the following:
-
Disabled people
-
Tangata Whaikaha Māori me Whānau and Pacifica
-
Whānau of disabled people
-
Providers of services to the disabled community
-
NEGL
-
EGL Christchurch

Appointing WRLG members
The Disabled, Whānau/Family and Provider representatives have all been nominated by their community to represent them on the WRLG.
Rāwā Wood-Bodley has accepted the nomination from the WRLG to build the Tangata Whaikaha Māori me Whānau and Pacific voice.
Roles in the WRLG
The WRLG has a collective leadership and decision making approach however some roles have been established to ensure we meet our contractual obligations: The Disabled and Whānau/Family Groups each have a Coordinator. These positions were advertised externally, and our current Coordinators are Amy Church (Disabled) and Lisa Hortin (Whānau).
Chris Davis from Aspire Canterbury serves as a Provider representative and Aspire also acts as a 'Host' for WRLG funding.
The WRLG also has an administrator, Robyn Cody, a role that was similarly advertised externally.
