Quick Connections: Where Purpose Meets People
1pm to 3.30pm, Sunday 9 November in Burwood/Parklands
Hello and thank you for your interest in this event
The goal of the event is to connect job seekers who are interested in supporting or mentoring disabled people as they live their good life with:
-
Disabled people who are actively looking to employ; or
-
Family/whanau of disabled people who are actively looking to employ a person/people to support their disabled family member to live their best life
Summer is often a difficult time to find a job as many workplaces have paused recruitment and however disabled people and their family/whānau find they have additional support needs over this period because their regular supports are unavailable for a range of reasons. This event is an opportunity for these three groups to make an initial connection.
Why we are running this event
We are the Whānau/ Family representatives on the Waitaha Enabling Good Lives (EGL) Regional Leadership Group. (WRLG).
EGL is an Approach where ALL disabled people and their whānau have greater choice and control over their lives The Approach is underpinned by 8 principles that include self-determination, person centred, ordinary life outcomes, mainstream first, relationship building, and mana enhancing.
As part of that Approach, disabled people, or whānau/family of disabled people have funding that allows them to make their own decisions over the supports they receive, including the people who support them. You can find out more about EGL and its Principles here.
The WRLG’s purpose is to lead change consistent with EGL. Enabling Disabled people and their whānau/family to have supports that are consistent with these principles is essential.

Are you an employer (disabled person or whānau/family of disabled)
Before we accept registrations from job seekers to attend this event, we ask them to understand that these roles are a precious opportunity to be a key resource for a disabled person or a family/whānau and it's important to honour that by being respectful and dependable.
We hope to attract registrations from a range of job seekers offering a variety of experience, and skills and seeking roles that might be temporary or permanent, part-time or full-time.
Are you a Jobseeker?
You don’t necessarily need prior experience - what matters most is your attitude and reliability and a willingness to learn new things and understand that the person who may employ you are the experts in their own lives.

working for a disabled person and/or family/whānau is a formal employment situation with an employment contract and all that goes with that. You can find out more about employment rights and obligations at Home | Employment New Zealand. Whether you work as an independent contractor or go on a payroll can be discussed with the employer (disabled person or family/whānau member)

Police and reference checks will likely be carried out by prospective employers

Enabling Good Lives (EGL) Approach and Principles are a guide for disabled people and families who support a disabled family member to consider as they work to live their best life. A good way to understand this is to look at what used to 'happen' to disabled people, and then a comparison to what it can be like using the EGL Vision and Principles here EGL in action | Waitaha EGL Regional Leadership Group
